Kairos

Retreat Program for High School Juniors & Seniors

KAIROS means "God's time" - the decisive moment in our lives when we are invited and challenged to make a decision of Jesus Christ in our lives. Kairos provides that opportunity for your teen - a time set aside from our daily routine to reflect on and pray about God, themselves and others.

Our Kairos retreats are made up of talks by a team of adult and student leaders, discussions, quiet time, prayer, sacraments, and free time.  This retreat is not a problem solver; it doesn't provide all the answers to one's questions. Rather, it is an invitation to deepen one's Catholic Christian way of life.

Testimonials

Testimonial videos from Kairos 2022 in Prescott Pines will be available soon.  Please check back soon to see what Kairos meant to our teens in their own words!

History

The Kairos Retreat Program has been in existence since 1965 when a team of priests, religious brothers, and laypeople developed the program under Fr. Douglas Brown of the Diocese of Brooklyn, New York.  It is modeled after Cursillo and adapted for teenagers.  In 1978, Salpointe High School in Tucson adopted Kairos as their Senior Retreat.  St. Agnes Parish in Phoenix adopted the retreat from Salpointe High School as their Confirmation retreat in 1980.  In 1998, the Kairos retreat program was brought to St. Andrew the Apostle in Chandler, and in 2022, St. Rose began partnering with St. Andrew’s to bring this Kairos retreat experience to our teens as our premier 11th and 12th grade retreat.  We are very grateful to St. Andrew’s for generously and graciously partnering with us!

Background

There is a basic human need to be apart and alone at times, and a retreat is such an opportunity. Therefore, we hold the retreat outside of town, away from one's normal environment.  Kairos is an experience of Christian community with a series of powerful talks, prayer, the sacraments, and involvement in small group discussions and exercises.

The Kairos retreat lasts for 4 days with a challenge to continue it for as long as one possibly can.  It includes a follow-up program designed to keep it alive indefinitely.  Kairos is a part of our youth ministry in that it solidifies the graces that the teen has already received.  The retreatants come away from Kairos with a greater awareness of themselves, of others, and of God.

Purpose

The purpose of Kairos is to allow the retreatants to see the value of their Catholic faith by living and experiencing their faith in community.  With the support of that community, they can more easily nurture their faith, their true worth, and their relationship to God and each other.

Kairos calls our teens to live their faith, to be active and vital members of the Church, and to develop their Christian leadership potential.  Kairos helps teens focus their attention on where they are in their journey and come to a personal understanding of how Christ fits into their lives.
